Winter weather and snow is coming to the Bismarck area, as a  winter system is moving into the area, with it, expect colder temperatures and the areas first real snowfall.

As the system moves through the area, snow will develop from the south moving west and northwest into the Red River Valley. The snow will develop Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. The system is moving in from the south, some areas of North Dakota including the north and north-west will dodge the track of the storm.

Snow amounts will vary depending on your location. As of now, the National Weather Service in Bismarck is predicting-

  • Two to five inches over Bismarck, Mandan, Jamestown, Steele, Linton and Elgin. Possible 6 inches over Ellendale and Ashley to Oakes. As conditions start to deteriorate driving will become hazardous and those with travel plans should monitor this situation closely.

The NWS has issued a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY from 3 p.m. Monday through 12 noon Tuesday.

  • Expect snow to develop around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon and will diminish around mid-morning Tuesday.
  • The heaviest snowfall rates will occur between Monday evening and over night into Tuesday morning which could effect visibilities at times.
  • Total snow accumulations between 2-5 inches locally. Plan for slippery and hazardous road conditions. Plan any trip, and share your route with family members. Be sure to have a winter travel kit in your vehicle that includes a fresh cell phone battery.
  • Expect higher amounts of snow fall to the east and south-east of the Bismarck-Mandan area.
  • 40 degree temperatures are anticipated for Thursday.
