WISHEK, N.D. (AP) — Cabbage is king in the German-Russian town of Wishek.

The town about 110 miles southeast of Bismarck claims to be the world's sauerkraut capital. And since 1925, the town of about 1,000 people has held a festival each fall celebrating the chopped fermented cabbage.

This year's annual Sauerkraut Day is slated for Wednesday at the city's civic center. Along with sauerkraut, wieners, mashed potatoes, cheese, coffee and water will be served.

The event began in 1925 when free wieners and sauerkraut were first served by business owners who wanted to thank customers for their patronage.
