NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans musical legend Allen Toussaint could do it all. Songwriting, producing, playing the piano and singing.

His decades-long musical journey ended Tuesday after Toussaint had a heart attack in Spain. He was 77.

Toussaint was a legendary songwriter and producer who penned such hits as "Southern Nights" and "Working in the Coal Mine."

He also played the piano and worked with recording artists such as Irma Thomas, Lee Dorsey, Patti LaBelle, Bonnie Raitt and Elvis Costello.

His home and studio, Sea-Saint, were flooded during 2005's Hurricane Katrina. Driven to spread the word about New Orleans musicians after the storm, Toussaint began touring extensively after the hurricane.

News of his death sparked an outpouring of emotion from fans and artists who worked with him.
